How do you write sex scenes so that they don't sound like other sex scenes? I try to be original and creative in my stories, but my sex scenes are starting to sound so repetitive, forced, and ordinary. Any help would be appreciated, but please don't say I should write from my own personal experiences... my sex life is not what you'd call exciting.

Thanks.

It really depends on what you mean by them not sounding like other sex scenes. Here's something to think about: did you know that, except for proper names, E-V-E-R-Y book ever written or that will be written can be found in the dictionary? Sex is sex: the penis goes in the pussy (ass or mouth), is pumped in and out, then climax. There, EVERY sex scene! The key to writing a memorable scene is the use of the other senses! What are the smells? How do they look at each other? How does it feel? What do they hear? Sex is NOT about pussies, penises, boobs, butts, or asses, though they are involved. Tell me, when you have had sex, what was the most important aspect of it? For me, it has always been what I was feeling; the emotions being evoked in me. Descriptives are the key to ANY scene, whether it is sex, a car chase, combat, or anything similar. And I'm not just talking about his "huge, throbbing cock" or her "ginormous boobs". Get inside the characters' heads! Tell us their intimate thoughts and feelings. Are they simply overwhelmed by what they arfe feeling for their partner or is the sex so lack-luster that painting the bedroom ceiling would be more exciting? What motivates ANY character---or real person---is NOT written on their foreheads (Oh, look. He wants to be rich and she's a gold-digger). As to your statement that your sex life is not (or was not) very exciting; one question: was it exciting AT THAT MOMENT? If yes, then you have had an exciting sex life. Do NOT equate excitement with the number of notches you have (or lack thereof) on your bedpost. If it is inspiration that you lack, just read more of the stories here. Or Google some images of things you find "hot" or that turn you on. Better yet, just let inspiration find you. Too many people make the mistake of trying to force things to happen----and it shows up in their writting, leaving the reader with a kind of half-satisfied feeling, much like a guy who gets his rocks off but not the woman.

I wish you good fortune and clear thoughts.

Ltirashin: Thank you for your help. I do try to get into the characters' heads. That's why I enjoyed writing my other stories ("Jenna & Keith" and "Pam Was Bored"). Like you, your stories are very original because of your sci-fi/fantasy motif. BTW, when I say my sex life isn't exciting, it's that I'm not very adventurous in the bedroom. I read all these stories and I'm thinking to myself, I've never done anything like this or that before. But I like what you say about using all five senses. It's not something I would have thought of. I have similar issues with my non-erotic work. I was writing what I hoped would be a novel when I ran into a block that I couldn't seem to get past. I think part of it is that I get too frustrated too quickly. Gotta stop doing that.

As for Tonic, Bite me! lol

I think emotion, natural dialogue and some kind of inner-conflict are the things that make a good sex scene. If the reader cares about your characters they won't be too bothered about whether or not your story is unique. As Ltirashin mentioned, it's all been done before.

If you feel your stories are all starting to sound alike, you might need to work more on developing your characters. When your characters all have their own distinct personalities, each one of your stories will have a different feel to it.

Actually, Lisa, I think it was the Bare Naked Ladies who said "It's All Been Done Before" (luv that song)

The sex scenes are important and should be approached just like sex, that is with a slow build up and titillating foreplay (are you listening, gentlemen?)

As my forte is fetish fiction, it is a little easier to make each scene different. Writing about vanilla sex could become wearing.

However, my aim is to keep the characters believable while they engage in somewhat unbelievable sexual interaction. Write what feels right. If it is vanilla sex, perhaps the location can be changed?

Maybe we should create a random plot generator? Just for fun.

1. Location

Paris
Rome
Bedroom
Office
Business Class
Fun Fair
etc

2. Characters

Man and Woman
2 women
2 men
Threesome
Foursome
Moresome
etc

3. Type of sex

Straight
Bondage
Oral
Anal
Reluctance
First Time
etc

4. Main Plot elements

Betrayal / revenge
Experimentation
Love story
etc

5. Outcome

Amazing orgasms all round
Unsatisfactory
Happy but left wanting more
etc

That might be amusing if we had enough contributions per category.

Unfortunately, many times, we get the condensed version, with number 2 and 3.

One of the key elements I focus on when writing erotica is creating an 'original sex scene'. As a writer, I would quickly get bored of the "boy meets girl and then they fuck" if the sex is standard fare that is already enjoyed by your average real-life couple. The typical "foreplay/penetration/girl comes/guy comes" formula can bore a writer just as much as a reader.

I try to think of unique and inventive scenarios to create some variety (and this is where a good plot line is required). Then I work on creating a dynamic interaction or intimacy between the characters, and that involves dialogue and internal conflict during the sex scene. I like to know how characters are thinking and reacting in the moment.

As well, I like to go outside the norm of the expected, sometimes putting readers on the edge of what they are comfortable with. It pushes me as an author in terms of writing challenging material (which prevents writer boredom) and a little 'shockerotica' keeps readers wondering what will happen next.

I know many authors can limit themselves based on anxiety about what their writing says about their own sexual deviancies but sometimes it's a good exercise to write something outside your own comfort zone. I believe that an inventive plot line and good writing can make even a conservative reader appreciate sex practices or genres outside of their own interests.

For example, I don't read from the BDSM category on my own, but if a writer I am already a fan of creates a story posted there, I'll read it and find myself surprised at what a turn on it can be when the subject matter is handled well.
