Thank you.

I think.
And people ask me why I rarely comment on a story anymore

Me too.
I'm so glad that the anonymous feature is off now and people have to actually login to leave a comment...the only time I got angry about a comment was when someone didn't have the guts to login and leave a shit comment ...

I don't get your reference to the UK though. Aren't you from Florida?

Actually I am neither a Brit nor a Yank, not a moose or a Dingo ...
But I lived in the UK for quite a while as a youngster and developed their sense of humor or humour

Ok, things got a bit out of hand. Let's make up.

Now the US reply to that would be .. "yes that would be good"

The UK reply ..would .. be "Ok darlin.. You put the kettle on, I'll get the HobNobs

or how about a cuppa, love?
Followup question: if it's better to PM for the shit stories rather than embarrass the author and hurt their poor fragile feelings, why are we forced to comment when we leave a score of 1 on the shit stories? Or do those comments get PMed to the person who penned the shit rather than publicly posted?
Enforcing a comment on a 1 vote was to cut down on the number of surfers who were just coming in, voting a 1 on every story for a laugh, and leaving. We also found that some authors were doing the same, especially to those authors appearing in the top 5 list on the front of the site. A bit pathetic I know, but it happened.

The new system works well.
Oh, I have no issue with leaving a comment. It just strikes me as amusing that the consensus is to provide negative feedback in private, to spare egos that can't handle criticism, and then on the stories most likely to elicit harsh responses, those comments must be made publiclly. Personally, I don't mind, but I do love irony.
The comments area is for positive and negative comments alike.

If all you want are platitudes, then how do you really expect to grow as a writer?

Those that can't stand negative criticism even have the option in their settings to disable comments entirely. I suggest instead of doing that, authors take the criticism (if deserved) on the chin, and grow a thicker skin instead of bleating about it.

Sounds good. That tongue pic of yours is giving me ideas. lol
Going back to the original question. I must admit if I'd rather have negative feedback by private message. I've been lucky because so far all my feedback has been great - many thanks to all who've left me a comment or emailed me. It's a brave thing to do, you know - put a story on public display. I was quite nervous about it. The comments that really interest me are from other authors and it gives me a real buzz. But if one gave me some criticism (as long as it was constructive) I'd be thankful for that as well.

And as for Elaine and Sir Barclay - please kiss and make up, guys. Me no like arguments

I agree with the points already made. It would be foolish not to want to get constructive criticism. How else could we improve? Hearing that someone enjoyed reading what I wrote makes me feel great. Thankfully most of the feedback is good.

Publicly insulting a story is a different matter. As one person pointed out, send a private message to the author. There are times that the criticism is incorrect but other readers may get swayed by them.

What I dislike most is someone who reads a story and rates it poorly because of the topic. Don't read stories if you don't like stories, for example. I wrote a story about a woman who fucked both her husband and son (not at the same time) and got pregnant. Some people were disturbed that she fucked her son and some were disgusted she might have gotten pregnant from him. is only one topic I write about but it's strictly fantasy. One guy publicly wrote that I am a sick woman to fuck my son. I don't even have a son. lol
Unfortunately, there are some readers who can't separate fact from fiction.

I agree completely!!!!!!
UK Born Pakistani Sex Stories Author. Writes about Reluctance/Manipulation.

(sigh)

Does anyone else get the feeling that we're all basically talking past each other here? The reasonable middle-ground seems obvious to me, as follows:

1)Yes, the comment section is for feedback, good and bad. If you really expect only accolades and hosannas for every story you write, then grow up and realize that sometimes life hands you lemons...so suck it up and make some lemonade out of them, dammit!
2)That said, don't go out of your way to ridicule or embarass an author in the comment section. Whoever the author is, they have made an earnest attempt to share, so why humiliate them and make them wish they hadn't? And the old 'hey, if you can't handle anonymous criticism on the internet...' defense is horseshit. That's just a (all too common) way for people to self-rationalize your own asshole behavior. Have some decorum, for god's sake.
3)Maybe in your negative comment, you were actually trying to be funny, but try to realize that some humor gets lost in cultural translation, and can be read as just withering insults. Use your brain before issuing criticism for the whole world to see.
4)If someone does upset you with what they wrote, take a deep breath, realize that it's simply a comment and move on. Don't come into the forum and bitch about it. Don't cry to mommy (Nicola) and ask her to make the bad man stop. If it really upsets you so much that you just can't let go of it, then PM said person and continue the dialogue like reasonable people.

Hopefully that just about covers it. Sorry, but I had to...
Well said, Lexy.

Right on!

I will never, ever, agree with the whole "just being honest"/"free to say what I want"/"I'm anonymous so I don't care" bullshit. Don't embarrass, humiliate, insult, or degrade by using one of those cop-out excuses because I don't buy it and others don't either. So having a story on here automatically means you are open to any kind of criticism or abuse? No it doesn't. It demands respect, same as it does in real life. It's like walking up to a person with a disfigured face and making an "innocent" comment about it. "Well, I'm just being honest." No you're not. You're being an ass. Use tact and politeness, because you're not impressing anybody when you don't.

Ok, now I'll go sit down and cool off.
