My first story, 'Mother and Son' was published the first day I submitted it. It has now been read over 600,000 times. You can all achieve this too.

As a moderator of the site and a story verifier, I can tell you that there are upwards of 40 stories in the que at any one time these days. Lush has grown a great deal in the 5 years I've been here and the waiting time has grown with it.
In order to maintain our quality and to ensure that our guidelines are followed, each and every story is read by our volunteer staff. Sometimes small edits are made, more often a story is judged by its merits. If it passes our quality and guideline review, it is published.
We would prefer to get your stories on the front page within hours of them being submitted and there are some things each writer can do to help this happen.
These are:
Be sure you have read and understand the guidelines. About 5% of the stories I see cannot be published because they violate either the age or consent rules.
Be sure you have proofread your story before submitting. Up to 40% of what we see needs some editing that we can do and then pass, but this drastically slows the process. When it's very busy, we may have to return the story to the writer.
Be sure your story uses proper grammar, punctuation and please, use spell check. Stories that do not fit our minimum requirements are returned. Sometimes multiple times. As you can imagine, this causes delays for everyone. This accounts for at least 30% of submissions.
So, what this means is that we can all help increase the speed at which stories are verified. If we only have to read them without editing or sending them back only to be read again, everyone's wait will be reduced.

Part of the problem is that older stories like that kind of get buried in the flood of newer material. Also, dpw's story is in Gay Male which, based on my own single contribution to that category, does seem to attract a lot more attention than some other categories.

thanks!I agree that different categories attack different interest levels. I personally find the gay male stories very interesting in a they are different then I would normally read way. some day I might try my hand at one, it's definitely on my list of things I'd like to write.

In addition to what Milik_the_Red said above, I would suggest using the Writers' Resources for information that is useful in writing and editing your story.
Do not rely on spell check alone as it allows many mistakes that are words. If spelling is an issue for you, have a friend proofread your work.
As was mentioned before, the story moderators volunteer their time to review submitted stories. They ascertain that the stories comply with site guidelines and are written with a literacy level expected on the site. Incidentally, the benchmark has been raised over the past two years to have more literate stories on the site. While they may do a few minor edits in an otherwise well written story, they are not here to provide proofreading and editing services for members. If there is work to be done on your story, you must put the time in to make corrections to get it published. You will be provided with editorial notes and related information links if and when your story is returned to you.

The writing was so much better than mine, the way you set the scene was superb. The sex scene was really true to life. Incredible when you think that you have never had the experience in real life.
Mine was simply a true description of sex with an ex and a made up beginning to get to the sex scene. If I had put in the more romantic sex that we had, the love making rather than the ass pounding type, then my hits would be halved.

Probably explains why I don't have anything approaching the Famous level. That'd be one route to go if I was merely concerned with page views, but I don't like to gross myself out when I'm writing anything, unless it also makes me laugh.

we try really hard to have an under 24 hour turn around here. it helps when the stories we get have been carefully proofread and edited. obviously, if we have to send it back for corrections, it's going to take longer to get it up on the front page. and yes, as Poppet said, we give priority to gold members - that's probably the main perk of gold membership, besides giving back to the site.

I can't agree with you on on 10,000 reads for non stories. I recently published a story 'Memoires of a Schoolgirl: The Art of Seduction' only 8 weeks ago and that has already got 17,000 reads. Ten thousand is a good figure, but most good writers here get good reads because people like to read good stories.

You've published an story two weeks ago and it's already overtaken that.
However you have also got stories that haven't reached 5,000 so there appears to be no logic to it.

I agree with you to a certain extent, but I have read many stories here that are great stories by very talented writers but have very few views. One I read the other night had been here quite a while and few views, 2 scores and no comments at all. And it was actually a good story too. And I have read some stories filled with errors and bad editing and they have tons of views, and lots of comments.
I read an older story the other night by a girl in the category that was a fairly hot story. It had a lot of views. I think it was even a famous story and tons of comments and votes. It was rated something a 4.98. It was proclaimed as one of the greatest stories ever, but it was filled with misspelled words, bad grammar, and the writer changed one of the male characters names twice during the story.
There are so many factors that go into things. One thing is some writers are known better than others and have built up a following.
