At a time when many are hairless (down there), the continued widespread use of the word ‘pussy’ by women and men is surely worth an idle thought or two. Thomas D’Urfey was in no such quandary in the 17th century when he wrote,A pretty young kitty she had that could purr. ‘Twas gamesome and handsome and had a rare fur. And straight up I took it and offered to stroke it. In hopes I should make it kind.” (Thanks to HuffPost for the quote.)

Any thoughts or comments, ladies or gents?

Yeah, but if all cats were like a Sphinx, they would be a lot less popular I suspect. Contemplate that for a minute. 😋

(yes, I'm a fan of hair down there)

Apes can talk dirty, too. Here's my entry in the "Dirty Talk" competition. Read it and let me know what you think. A virgin student gets a special present from his female housemate.

Well, one's personal tastes were not part of the question AFAIK. Unless I misunderstood OP's intent, the question was: why do we keep using the word 'pussy' even when there's no hair? My post was a short, a bit tongue-in-cheek, answer to that specific question.

But I'll give a more lengthy, serious and somewhat personal answer:

When writing, being understood immediately, without causing the reader to pause, is often important, so I guess it's one of the reasons most people use the word 'pussy' regardless of the character's grooming habits, just because it's the default term currently.

When talking, I can still see a number of occasions where using that word is justified. When one wants to informally refer to this part of the anatomy without making any assumptions as to the grooming habits of the person, for example.

IRL, I most often refer to a hairless one as an 'apricot' (even in my native language), and I know i'm not the only one. But, as the quote in OP's post shows, the word 'pussy' has been in use for centuries, and language evolves much slower than our grooming habits.

Hairy, I'd even say 'bushy', was still the default style in the 80's. Pussy hair disappeared progressively over the span of the 90's, mostly on porn actresses to begin with (likely because it allowed the camera to catch more details of their anatomy) and the practice spread in the general population from there. So it's a 20 years old thing, more or less.

(I am of course aware that the practice of shaving down there isn't that recent, but it was mostly used to get rid of lice historically, and women often used merkins to 'hide' their hairlessness down there. So it was quite different.)

If hairless remains the most common style for several centuries, then I'd be surprised if a word like 'apricot' hasn't taken over in common usage by that time. But I doubt any of us will live long enough to witness that change.
