Just finished "Life of Pi" - Mann Booker prize winner 5 years ago. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Halfway through "Like the Flowing River" - Paulo Coelho. A collection of his short stories and newspaper column. Have to say it's rather too "Christian" and preachy for my liking.
A few weeks ago I read "Memoirs of a Geisha" and found it compulsive. Not until the end did I discover it was a novel. Beautifully written and very descriptive of pre WWII Japan.
Now re-reading for the third time, SHOGUN by James Clavell. Wonderful stuff.
i was reading "motor mouth" the other day (it's the sequel to "metro girl" by janet evanovich, who writes the stephanie plum novels)... it made me howl with laughter but i wanted more smut, lol.
if anyone is into graphic novels, they should pick up neil gaiman's "sandman" books... they are absolutely fabulous.
Anyone know of a good book that i can read?
I just finished a series by Jeanne DuPrau
First book was city of embers, the second was the people of sparks.
Now i need a good book/series of books to read. Any ideas?
What genre are you interested in Joj?
I read it all pretty much.
From sci-fi, to realistic fiction, to horror, to mysteries, historical fiction, and poetry. I like it all.
But my favorites would have to be fiction stories about midieval times.
Imagica by Clive Barker. My favorite is one I can't even classify. Sci/fi-fantasy, some eroticism and it sometimes seems as a female and male version of the story told at the same time in the same book. Just my favorite read.
if you want a midieval novel try reading The Pillars of the Earth or World Without End, both fantastic books
World without end sounds familiar
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.
Brilliant novel. Solzhenitsyn's a genius.
Also, check out We, by Yevgeny Zamyatin. It inspired Orwell to write 1984.
A series that the ladies will love is The Empire series by Raymond Feist and Janny Wurts. It's fantasy series set in a Japanese type of culture where Mara of the Acoma comes to rule her family, and all she has to do is stay alive while most of the other families and clans plot her death. She does, however, do far far more than survive.
She made my all time heroines list, which includes Mame Dennis and Scarlett O'Hara...so you know just how awesome she is.
"A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere." - Groucho Marx
Very good series Castlequeen. Love Raymond Feist.
Hooked on James Patterson!
The Quickie, Sam's Letters to Jennifer and You've Been Warned are definatly MUST reads!
"Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell.
I am reading this now and although I have a educated sense of economics, this book makes many things very clear. Unfortunately, the average person on the street knows dip-shit about what runs the economy. Not to mention how politicians, all parties, take advantage of this ignorance. I wish it would be required reading in high schools and colleges....it will "Change" their perspective.
"This was a great book. I think all voting Americans should read it. No math or numbers, just commonsense explanations about how economics work. If only we all understood better how the economy worked and didn't allow politicians to make decisions based on populist agendas we'd be much better off as would the rest of the world. Concerned about 3rd world poverty? Read this book. Concerned about gas prices? Again, read this book."

I've started to enjoy autobiographies.

Just started getting into the Dresden Files series of books by Jim Butcher..
