Do not Forget Carlos Santana
Slash is ok,and I'd rate Eric Clapton a close.
But Carlos Santana can make his guitar speak and scream the words to his music......
He makes love with his guitar...
Carlos makes love to his guitar not with it! LOL Bonamassa not widely known .... spend a little time with his CD - Acoustic at The Vienna hall and you will come away impressed! That man can lay a lick down!
Malmsteen

I don't need another 6.
JEFF BECK
CLAPTON

Richard Z. Kruspe (Rammstein)
Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day)
Jeff Healey (Jeff Healey Band)
Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac)
George Harrison (Beatles, Travelling Wilburys)
Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy)
James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preacher)
Interesting thread!
To me, a good guitarist is not only about his skills ; I had a guitar teacher that could play any song performed by Jimi Hendrix just as well, still he didn't invent this style and therefore isn't a top world guitarist.
Here's my list, in no particular order, judging from skills, creativity, style, innovation, etc :
- Jimi Hendrix
- Richie Blackmore
- David Gilmore
- Robert Fripp
- Neil Young
- Eric Clapton
- Jimmy Paige
- Gary Moore
- Pete Townsend
- Ian MacKaye (a very personnal favorite from an indie band called Fugazi)
What about Les Paul? sheesh
Ok sorry, maybe he doesn't count for rock but if you listen to Angus Young, he comes across as more of a natural blues guitarist than a pure rock guitarist.
Back on the Van Halen kick, You will never see another guitarist that has been mimicked /copied more than Eddie Van Halen has been. What does that tell you? . / ! He's alown a renown innovator in the guitar world.
lordy lordy lordy.
Yes, the legendary guitarist/inventer was a great guitar innovator but he was almost exclusively a jazz musician. the list I have drawn up probably doesn't agree with many but here goes in no particular order:
Eric Johnson
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
Steve Vai
Duane Alman
Gary Hoey (Focus... remember Hocus Pocus?)
Drake Levin (Paul Revere & The Raiders... the 1960's)
Pete Townsend
Carlos Santana
-- three others deserve honorable mention although they are not strictly rock musicians: Lindsay Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac), Dave Davies (The Kinks) and Albert Lee.
Well piss, I forgot the great Herman Lee of Dragonforce that is so good he is endorsed by Ibanez guitars like Steve Vai is.

4)Pete Townshend
5)Eric Clapton
6)The Edge
