I wanted to share an amazing documentary I just saw at the Vancouver South African Film Festival. I hope that people will try to see it. It is supposed to be showing soon in L.A., CA.

By first-time director, Odette Schwegler, the film is titled: Glory Game: The Joost van der Weisthuizen Story. Filmed over 18 months, it details the superstar South African rugby captain rise and retirement (via past televised games) to his eventual diagnose of of ALS and the desire to bring awareness in his homeland of the plight of ALS.

This documentary is beautiful. Even non-sports lovers will be inspired by this handsome and energetic man who was a huge physical present evolve to sharing his immense compassion that somehow enable others to find their own empathy, and all with a sense of purpose and humour.

After the viewing, the Director, Odette Schwegler and two ALS specialists, discussed and answered questions about the film, its star and the disease. Odette and the two others echoed the take away from this film, its pain and its joy, is that life is to be lived with an authentic embrace and that the spirit of a survivor is inspiring.

I hope you find the film to view in your home city. It is worthwhile to see for so many reasons.

The First Monday in May is a 2016 documentary film about the creation of the 2015 art exhibition China: Through the Looking Glass by curator Andrew Bolton at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Fasinating for the Fashion-lover and the Art-lover. And of course, you get to see the Real Devil Wears Prada, in action, as the prima-hostess.

Restrepo is a masterful documentary about the War in Afghanistan.

Planet Earth needs no introduction.

I will continue to shout about the Frontline documentary series until forced to stop. They are all excellent.

Taxi To the Dark Side is truly harrowing.

Shoah will haunt your nightmares.

I watch a lot of documentaries, mostly not ones that will make you feel good.

Thankyou for this thread as I prefer Docs over films at times.

we watched Laurel Canyon on Epix which is the story of all the musical artists who hung out there from 65-75 - CSNY, the Byrds, the Doors, Joni Mitchell, Love, Frank Zappa, The Monkees, Jackson Browne, the Eagles. not my thing, mostly, but it was really fascinating.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

One of the most famous documentaries is The Thin Blue Line which many critics dismissed as not truly a documentary. It was instrumental in getting an innocent man freed from prison. It won several awards but was rejected for consideration in the Academy Awards for best documentary. It came out in 1988.

That's an Errol Morris documentary right? He's a great documentarian in general.

I'm watching Athlete A right now. It's about the assault of the women's gymnastics team and all the cover ups that went along with it.

Also if you are into true crime I suggest

"I'll be gone in the dark" about the Golden state killer.

PBS has a series of documentaries on various immigrant groups in America.

I've watched them all. They are pretty informative and give a pretty good insight into the immigrant culture of various groups.

Latino Americans
Asian Americans
Jewish Americans
Italian Americans
Irish Americans

Each series is about 6 hours long. The Latino Americans one was particularly well done.

I love PBS docs but they are more info based and not really meant for entertainment. I love them... I have the whole American Experience series and all the Ken Burns docs. I've watched the 10 hours of his civil war doc twice. But I completely understand that most people might find these a bit dry.

This isn't the best doc I've seen, but I watch a fuck ton of docs.

It does shine a light on certain aspects of male sexuality from a scientific point of view.

There's two sports documentaries that I recommend.

Netflix's Formula 1: Drive to Survive, Season's 1 & 2

And Amazon Prime's The Test, about the rebuilding of the Australian cricket team after the sandpaper-gate controversy

Into the Inferno, which I saw on Netflix, is an excellent piece on volcanoes by the great German director Werner Herzog.

Innocence Lost. The PBS Frontline documentary about the Little Rascals daycare case. This is an older program and I bring it up because the man who was convicted was recently exonerated. There is a video on YouTube from the Duke University School Of Law featuring a panel that includes that poor man (Bob Kelly), who wrongly spent years in prison. That is also worth watching, though you will have to turn the volume up, since it is difficult to hear.

The Night Stalker: Hunt For a Serial Killer just came out on Netflix.

It's a four part series about Richard Ramirez. This series focuses actually more on the investigation and the detectives working the case than the actual killer.

One of the things that struck me about this was how the media at the time turned serial killers into celebrities by giving them cool nicknames and glossing over the horrible stuff they did.

Just watched the new Tiger Woods doc. It's pretty good. It runs just over three hours.

It makes me really hate the paparazzi. Such garbage people.

I think its on HBO.
