Not being a devout follower of the comic (more of a DC man myself) I'm going to stick to the movie.
Thor, followed closely by Captain America. Iron Man doesn't appeal to me as much simply because I haven't really enjoyed his stand alones, the Hulk is a bit shallow in the movies, and Black Widow and Hawkeye simply didn't feel very super to me when compared to the rest of the team, especially when the movie goes out of its way to give them less super side fights to do when the others are off fighting.
Also, come on where is Hawkeye's purple suit. Bring back the purple suit :P.
I would say Tony Stark/Iron Man. Hes got the looks, power, money, confidence, hard not to admire. Although I do have a special love for Hawkeye.
I liked Thor. His powers were mystical and organic, tapped directly from the universe, not an artificial technological embellishment like the serum used to transform Steve Rogers into Captain America or Tony Stark's suit. Nor were they a scientific accident like Banner's over exposure to gamma radiation. I also liked Thor's very active sense of noblesse oblige and his gravitas, two virtues he shared with Captain America, who ran a close second as my favorite Avenger. Overall though the movie did an amazing job of letting all of the super heroes shine without eclipsing one another and eventually letting them all coalesce into a team despite initial confrontations. All of which could have only happened with Joss Whedon at the helm. Although Guillermo del Torro probably could have done a good job with it too.
Hawkeye. I'm going by the movie and Jeremy Renner does it for me every time...He's a babe.
I might add that I think Black Widow thought Thor's hammer was arousing.
Black Panther followed by Captain America then Thor and Hulk
Has to be Thor. Not only is he the only Avenger that is a god of legend but Chris Hemsworth is ridiculously good looking and sexy in that chainmail.

Captain America is my personal favorite, even though his strength is through the serum, I like that he is a great leader and always sticks to his morals. He doesn't let his abilities get him all arrogant like almost all super heroes and I have to respect that.
Ironman cause he has all the gadgets and weapons.

The Hulk! He is unbeatable and is hilarious when he punches Thor or throws Loki around ...even my daughter says hes the best Avenger
