I have a friend who recently decided to purchase a record player and start collecting vinyl. However, their taste in music is pretty basic - just the hits. So I started wondering what records exist in (almost) everyone's collection to the point of being cliched? They're not necessarily records you want to listen to, they're overplayed and tired (or maybe just familiar and comfortable), but they seem to show up everywhere. Here's five to start:

  • Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits

  • Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd

  • Greatest Hits 1974-78 by The Steve Miller Band

  • Thriller by Michael Jackson

  • Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi

American Beauty, Grateful Dead

Tapestry, Carol King

Tintinnabulation - first place (Free Spirit)
Comet Q - second place (Quick and Risqué Sex)
Amnesia - third place (Le Noir Erotique)

  • Rumours by Fleetwood Mac

  • Blue by Joni Mitchell

  • Abraxas by Santana

  • Al Green's Greatest Hits

  • Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits

  • *Kind of Blue by Miles Davis (if they have even a passing interest in Jazz)

  • Wildcard - Any 2 Beatles albums (including greatest hits packages).
