Sir Christopher Lee, the veteran actor and star of many of the world's biggest film franchises, has died aged 93.

The English-born actor, who made his name playing Dracula and Frankenstein's monster in the Hammer horror films, appeared in more than 250 movies.

He was best-known for his villainous roles - including Scaramanga in James Bond and evil wizard Saruman in The Lord of the Rings. The actor's other credits include The Wicker Man and Star Wars.

He is reported to have died on Sunday at Chelsea and Westminster hospital in London, after being hospitalised for respiratory problems and heart failure.
Ohh noooooo...oh wow we lost a magnificent man...rip
Wow, I actually didn't think that he was that old. I imagined that he was closer to 80-85 year-old.

He still appeared in some movies in the last few years (The Hobbit notably), he sure had his passion at heart until the very end.

Rest in peace...

sad

Ornette Coleman passed away, too, at 85. He was one of the major innovators of free jazz.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

I'll never forget him in Horror of Dracula, acting alongside another Hammer Films' legend, Peter Cushing. The films from that studio helped redefine the horror film genre and both Lee and Cushing played major roles in this.

Incidentally, Cushing went on and played the commander of the Death Star in the first Star Wars film, a departure from his usual good guy roles in the 60's.

They were both pioneers, together again now in death. Their likes will not be seen again. May they rest in peace and spend eternity reminiscing about the good old days.

I love this movie...

RIP Chris Lee

It was apparent one of Lee's favorites among his roles, too. A very talented man and a very interesting life (did you know he started musical career in his eighties?).

And Rach, I noted Coleman's passing, too. He could do things with a sax that others could only dream about.

Fortunately both lived long, full lives and left us plenty to remember them by.
Sir Christopher Frank Carandini Lee, CBE, CStJ (27 May 1922 – 7 June 2015) was an English actor, singer and author. With a career spanning nearly 70 years, Lee initially portrayed villains and became best known for his role as Count Dracula in a sequence of Hammer Horror films. His other film roles include Francisco Scaramanga in the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), Saruman in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001–2003) and The Hobbit film trilogy (2012–2014), and Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus in the final two films of the Star Wars prequel trilogy (2002 and 2005) and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008).

Lee was knighted for services to drama and charity in 2009, received the BAFTA Fellowship in 2011 and received the BFI Fellowship in 2013. Lee considered his best performance to be that of Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the biopic Jinnah (1998), and his best film to be the British horror film The Wicker Man (1973).

Always noted as an actor for his deep strong voice, Lee was also known for his singing ability, recording various opera and musical pieces between 1986 and 1998 and the symphonic metal album Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross in 2010 after having worked with several metal bands since 2005. The heavy metal follow-up titled Charlemagne: The Omens of Death was released on 27 May 2013.[3][4] He was honoured with the "Spirit of Metal" award at the 2010 Metal Hammer Golden God awards ceremony.

Lee died at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on 7 June 2015 at 8:30 am after being admitted for respiratory problems and heart failure, shortly after celebrating his 93rd birthday there. His wife delayed the public announcement until 11 June in order to break the news to their family.
