Either the first time you heard it or the first time you actually paid attention to the lyrics, what songs totally surprised you? And why did it?

One that definitely surprised me when I heard it was Fack by Eminem haha

"Hit 'Em Up" by 2Pac made my jaw dropped when I first heard it. I knew the diss song could cause many problems!

There have been quite a few, but most recently, I'd say Trip the Darkness by Lacuna Coil. The lyrics themselves aren't really anything special, but the way it was sang and played, was pretty amazing. The chorus "follow me, follow me, as I trip the darkness" made the hairs on the back of my neck stick up and my jaw did literally drop because of the energy of it and the rather high pitch of Cristina Scabbia.

"Intervention" by Arcade Fire. The music is stunning, the lyrics powerful.

"Wake up" by the same band, ditto.

I was very moved by a French duet called "Là-bas"= "There". Appart from the lyrics which is sort of an hymn to liberty, most French also remember that the talented female singer lost her life in the hands of a jealous lover little time after recording that beautiful song.

Lyrics:

There
Everything is new and everything is wild
Free continent without wire fencing
Here our dreams are narrow
That's why I'll go there

There
You must have courage and be brave
But everything is possible at my age
If you have strength and faith
You can reach the gold
That's why I'll go there

Don't go
There are storms and wrecks
The fire, devils and mirages
I know you're so fragile sometimes
Stay in the hollow of me

We have so much love to do
So much happiness to come
I want you as husband and father
But you, you dream to leave

Here everything is already decided
And we can't change it
Everything depends on your birth
And me, I'm not born well

There
Far from our lives, our villages
I'll forget your voice, your face
Even if I hold you tight in my arms
You escape already (from me) there

I'll have my chance the day and my rights

Don't go

And the pride that I don't have here

There

Everything you deserve is yours

Don't go

Here the others impose their laws

There

I'll maybe loose you there

Don't go

But I loose myself if I stay here

There

Life didn't let me the choice

Don't go

You and me it'll be there or not

There

Everything is new and everything is wild

Don't go

Free continent without wire fencing

There

Beautiful as you can't imagine

Don't go

Here our dreams are narrow

There

That's why I'll go there

Don't go

The choice wasn't given to me

There

I loose myself if I stay here

Don't go

That's why I'll go there.

When I first heard it I thought it was gospel. Then, my mouth dropped and I rolled on the floor laughing so hard.

'Angel' by Massive Attack. Was surprised to learn the vocalist wasn't female, but reggae singer Horace Andy. No matter. I still absolutely adore the song! Take a listen.

There's a song called Gorecki by a group called Lamb. The first time i heard it was after a long night of partying. I was laying snuggled up with some newly discovered friends and the sun was just rising, the first rays turning the sky light as the DJ put it on. It was one of the most uplifting euphoric and spiritual moments of my life - i can, to this day, put that song on and recapture the love and wonder, hope and beauty that i felt that morning.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Macklemore - Same love.

I heard it the first time while driving, and after a few moments I told everyone else in the car to shut up and I started it over again. I cried.

Same Love by Macklemore, it's just such powerful lyrics it makes everyone hush up and listen to what he's saying when it comes on.

Not so much jaw dropping, as jaw drooping. Just a sad, emotional song.

Ebeneezer Goode - The Shamen.

When I first heard it I thought the song was Es are good. Yeah I know it is a play on words.

Also Rum and Coca-Cola by the Andrew Sisters. That was jaw dropping to know what the lyrics really ment.

I remember being a little kid and hearing Voodoo Child for the first time. I was blown away by the sound of the guitar.

Lyrically, Ian Dury wrote some real jaw-dropping, poignant, funny, thought provoking lyrics with the Blockheads.
I couldn't pick just one of his songs.

Elvis Costello also springs to mind:
"Calling Mr. Oswald with the swastika tattoo
There is a vacancy waiting in the English voodoo
Carving "V" for "vandal" on the guilty boy's head
When he's had enough of that, maybe you'll take him to bed
To teach him he's alive before he wishes he was dead"

The Generator, by Bad Religion

This makes my jaw drop, pounds my heart, twists my mind and chills my bones simultaneously.

It speaks about the fact that, whatever our beliefs, every human senses there is something of greater nature behind our simple existences.

I've known it all along
Like the bones under my skin
Like actors in a photograph
Like papers in the wind

There's a flower at the window
There's a knife on the floor
Like turbines in darkness
Like the blood on my door

It's the Generator...

Punk rock band Bad Religion, spreading brilliant thoughts since 1980.

The singer, Greg Graffin, has a doctorate in Evolutionary Biology. I have his autographed PhD thesis at home.

This song was written by guitarist Brett Gurewitz, though.

Many of the songs today really. Their "blue" content is unacceptable to me when there are millions of kids that listen to it and watch the videos.

I believe Timothy by The Bouys probably caught me by surprise more than any other as it sneaks cannibalism into the last verse. I first heard it somewhere in the early seventies I think.
