Rock Star denotes the Rock genre. Kanye makes noise which some people do seem to find appealing but it is definitely not rock!

Though somebody mentioned that the term "rock star" has transcended genre and has been used to refer to some musical icons that are not necessarily rockers, it doesn't mean that they are correct in their usage of the term.

Also, while Jimmy Page is still alive he holds the title of biggest rock star on the planet. I mean seriously, who doesn't like Led Zeppelin.

actually, as culture and language evolves, means more then just someone who plays rock and roll music - i've heard sports stars described as rock stars, and movie stars and business men - my wife even claims to be a rock star when she's kicking ass and taking names and she's never even been near a guitar, so no, rock stars don't really have to play rock and roll these days.

type in rock star definition in your google search bar and "a famous singer of rock music." will be what comes up. I'm not saying that it doesn't have other uses as a term. I just suggested that it doesn't mean these uses are correct.

According the the Urban Dictionary, which i googled, Rock Star means:

1) Someone who can stay up and party all night long and then wake up and take care of business in the morning.

2) An energy drink made in Las Vegas that is as potent as Red Bull, yet doesn't taste like medicine, has extra ingredients (like "Milk Thistle", which is supposed to clean out your liver), and is sold in 16 ounce cans for about the same price as other 8.4 ounce competitors.

3) Someone who engages in hardcore partying, including tons of alcohol, drugs, and sex.

4) Someone who doesn't follow rules, they make their own. The go out of their way to be extraordinary, different from everyone else. They sometimes choose to have exotic piercings or tatoos, some have really, really crazy hair! But those are not the only kind of rock stars...

5) Being true to ones self and their very nature; Living without limitations or restrictions to ones obsesions. Freedom. Someone who is Living the Life You Want to Live and doing things you can Only Dream About. The Person you want to be, or dream about being.

6) A game developer known for its kick ass games such as: grand theft auto, red dead redemption, midnight club, etc.

language evolves. it will evolve again. at this point in time, Rock Star doesn't always equate with rock and roll. btw, pop is short for popular music - do you know that Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby were once pop stars? obviously, they have very little in common with Brittney, but yeah, they were. smile

The urban dictionary isn't what I'd call a source worth quoting but you are right in the sense that it is used in many different ways to mean different things. Since I love rock music I wouldn't call Kanye a rock star but if society wants to use that term to describe him then so be it I guess.

it's a fun source, tho, and really, it is kind of where culture is headed - i use it as a source whenever i go shop at hot topic so i can translate the sales people. smile

Well, if we're going to talk in terms of music...Kanye doesn't fall under the 'rock' genre. He falls under the crap...er...rap genre. What about the Sir Paul McCartney...been on the charts for decades and just came out with a new album. He beats the crap out of Kanye for popularity...number of fans...musical accomplishment.

If we're talking in terms the urban dictionary definition then I don't think Kanye is even on the charts. He spews this absurd noise because he knows he'll get free publicity and how can you beat free publicity?
BTW...I think I saw Sprite's name under one of the definitions of 'rock star' in the urban dictionary under the rock star unicorn category.

It's too bad the media always quotes out of context. Again, he's not saying he's a rockstar as in he is the top of the rock music genre. He was saying that as far as culture, fashion and influence goes, rap has become more relevant than rock and roll - and that means as far as importance and cultural influence goes, he's therefore become the 'biggest rockstar on the planet'. Finally saw the actual interview. Not advocating, defending and agreeing and yeah, it's super arrogant, but it's always nice to know what the context was before unloading.

*Quoted from the Interview

"Rap is the new radio," he announces, before continuing:

"Where's the culture at? I'm sitting in the middle of it, whether I'm at a dinner with Anna Wintour or at a listening session with Pusha, or me and Virgil (Abolh, West's adviser) are in Rome giving our designs to Fendi and over and over getting knocked down. We brought the leather jogging pants six years ago to Fendi and they said 'No.' How many motherfukers you done seen with the leather jogging pants? So when I see [Saint Laurent creative director] Hedi Slimane and it's all like, 'This is my take on the world.' Yeah, he's got some nice $5,000 jeans in there… There's some nice ones, some good shit here and there. But we culture. Rap is the new rock stars."

"It's been like that for a minute," Lowe adds.

"It's been like that for a minute, Hedi Slimane," he yells back. "It's been like that for a minute. We the new rock stars and I'm the biggest of all of them!"

Those bunch of dead people did something under their 30 years of life more than you and I could do in our lifetime, not to mention their fucking talent, which you have to agree to.
They lived in different music era, its not to compare to, but their popularity can be measured, easily, and I dont think Mr.Kanye can fill the stadium of 100.000 people which granfathers Rolling Stones did on their tour in the begining of century outside the USA of course.

actually, very few people could pull those numbers. attendance doesn't equate to talent. also, we're in the middle of a recession - people don't have affordable income to blow and the fans of the Stones are probably in an entirely different income bracket then the fans of Kanye - i'm guessing your typical Stones fan is richer and older i mean, did anyone SEE the ticket prices for the last tour? Kanye's fans are probably mostly lower to middle class income and less able to afford to go to a lot of shows.

and yes, the Stones have talent - they have also not put out (arguably) any relevant new music since the early 80s. people go to see the old stuff - from what i hear, the new stuff is when everyone gets up and goes to buy more beer. not a crack on the Stones, btw, they can still PLAY hard - they're just not a creative force like they were in the 60s and 70s.

O, thanks for clearing this out (for me at least) and previous post as well ;)

Kanye is not trying to deminish rock subculture, he is actually taking rock as synonym to describe his work or power or impact that he has on people. Kinda flattery smile
Rock generation had great impact on democracy we know today, their rebellion was liberating. Rock influance is mayor and Kanye is actually recognizing it, it has nothing to do with music but with subculture. Rock is huge, I dont think any gender of music will ever have this kind of a impact on people again, worldwide that is.

So in that contest (bad boys and what kind of influence they have on people), rap is new rock. However that subculture really is not big around the world as it is in north america. However pop 'is' and that scares shit out of me what kind of a consequences new generations will have because of it.

I have to admit that some of the comments I read here were as entertaining as KW's antics and incredibly inflated ego is.

No, he is not the biggest rock star on the planet. In fact when it comes to music in general, he ONLY hits a select genera and it could be debated if he is even the top of THAT one.

Also to think that POP/RAP/HIP HOP is now the dominant music of our culture is IMO not even close to being accurate. It simply depend on where YOU hang out, WHO you hang out with, and WHERE you look. The world can seem like one thing if the only thing YOU look at is a small slice of it. If you grew up in Arizona, and didn't know anything but Arizona, you might think that planet was void of any real surface water. But the truth is that the earth is MOSTLY water. That is the same with music.

Right, but we're not talking about what's driving the culture in Arizona. We're talking about what's driving the culture in general, and there's not much question out there that rock music's cultural influence has faded, and hip-hop culture now enjoys that cultural influence that rock once had. It doesn't mean we all have to like it, but the iconic 'rock stars' that everyone trots out are all past their prime or dead. Current hip-hop stars are cultural trend-setters, and in a few cases, moguls, beyond just their music.

So while I agree that an argument could be had that Kanye isn't the biggest, most influential hip-hop artist, it would have to be a very compelling one, because he does appear to be on top of the mountain at the moment. Meanwhile, the biggest selling rock album right now is by Kings of Leon. Good musicians probably, lots of fans...but not much cultural influence or familiarity beyond that. Anyone able to name all the members without looking it up? Any of the members?

After reading what he actually said, he isn't even saying he's the biggest rockstar, he's saying he's the biggest rapper and that is true... He's saying that at the moment rappers are the bigger than life music idols with young people.

If you actually read this he is simply musing on the music industry and the shift in current musical tastes. Where in the 60's 70's and 80's "rock" stars who played in the rock 'n' roll genre were the fashion innovators and sex symbols, in the 90's through now there has been a shift. Mick jagger was the sex symbol, the guy girls wanted to be with and guys tried to be like because he was setting trends in music, culture and fashion. Elvis before him but he is barely thought of as a typical rockstar by today's standards but he truly was the biggest one ever. But elvis' music doesn't sound like rock n roll. Not like what people have come to think rock n roll sounds like anyway. The rolling stones, Beatles, led Zeppelin, the doors sounded nothing like elvis... And elvis has been said to invent the genre. He was the first bigger than life "rock" star.

What makes it rock music? Drums? Bass? Guitar? Vocals? Kanye uses all of those. His vocal style is just in rap form. Primus - a rock band - has a spoken word style too but no one says they aren't rock music. I'm not saying Kanye is rock and roll. He is hip hop/rap. But really, music is impossible to label. Anything popular can be considered pop music, anything without a major label can be considered indie music. Regardless of style.

I only own one kanye west song on my ipod and it's actually one where he talks about how much of an asshole he can be, ironically. But in this interview he was boasting about his genre of music being popular and that he was the most popular in it. Neither of which are an exaggeration.

To be honest I think someone like lady gaga could be considered the biggest rock star recently. There sure are more people rocking out at her shows than almost anyone. I feel like she could hardly go anywhere without getting mobbed by fans. Maybe more than kanye or anyone really. Is her music rock n roll? No. But was led Zeppelin's rock n roll? Sure, although some would say it was giving birth to heavy metal... Was Led Zeppelin the same rock n roll that Elvis invented?

I understand your point, but it still depends on where you look. In many parts of the country, it is not hip hop, or rock, that drives the culture.... but Country and Western. That is why I made the Arizona analogy. I was not saying that hip hop was not a cultural force, I was saying it isn't the dominant one depending on where you live. It IS pretty important, no doubt. But I am sure you would also agree that WHO the trend setter happens to be at any given time changes and they seldom last very long.

That being said...... I personally think he is a douche. LOL

Kanye is confused. By biggest rock star on the planet, he meant he smokes more rock than anyone else on the planet.

Genres of music have become so fractured and are branching out in different directions. I had heard the name Kanye West before but really did not know what he did. Checked up on his music and no, I don't like it. You could torture me with that. I like real rock, mostly classic rock, blues, old-fashioned R&B, and country (love country). I also love classical music and have season tickets to the symphony. However, I can't stand hip-hop, but I realize that is just my personal tastes. Kanye West maybe King of hip hop and I really don't care, unless I was a financial investor in his business empire.

Taking a queue from what Sprite said above rock star used as a description, my goal in life is to be a rock star of business, a capitalistic superstar.
