Where are my fellow metalheads at?

Funnily enough, I used to be rather down on metal. Have only really begun to appreciate it in the last 2-3 years. Not sure I am a "metalhead" yet, but a lot closer than I have been before in my 55+ years going around the sun. Just started listening to these guys yesterday, for instance, even though they started when I was in university.

🤘Been a metalhead even before being a teen (thanks to my elder cousin). When I was a teen, I was into thrash/groove metal. My tastes evolved over the years, moving towards a slower, heavier and grittier sound. Nowadays, I'm more into Stoner/Sludge. In other words, 'normies' still call me a metalhead, but I'm not sure most metalheads would consider me as such.

(Not really 'metal' but I guess this is the best place to share this: )

🤘 HELLFEST!!!! 🤘

Two week-ends this year, for the 15th anniversary, and because it was cancelled the past 2 years. Metallica as the closing act next Sunday. Let's say I know what I'll be doing this week-end and the next...

I'll be watching this year's concerts from the comfort of my sofa, with cold beer (I decided to try out the "Hellfest" IPA from Brasserie Mélusine, seemed fitting), the best pizza in town and, most importantly in the current heatwave, naked with a fan blowing on me. Somehow I'll be much better off than those who paid the outrageous prices for tickets, and will have to stand for hours in the searing heat.

Not all concerts will be live streamed though, but Arte.tv (on their Arte Concerts page) will stream Alestorm, Down, Megadeth, and about 20 others. (You may need a VPN set to France to be able to watch the streams.)

Sounds fun. I thought about watching Metallica's set from PinkPop yesterday but the timing was off. Even Nightwish, who I had hoped to watch, were on at a bad time in my time zone so only caught the last couple songs in their set. Did catch their lead singer's, Floor Jansen, solo set earlier in the day, but she's not really doing metal in her solo work, save some covers of songs from her After Forever and ReVamp days. That livestream was available globally, it seems, though. Will see about Hellfest streams in North America.

And you mentioned Alestorm, who are an absolutely hoot to watch in their videos. Heavy metal pirates for the win.

Just looked at the lineup. Holy wow, I could spend a good chunk of next weekend watching Hellfest if I can get the stream and the time. Saturday alone, we've got Nightwish and Epica on Mainstage 02 (yes, I'm into symphonic metal in a big way and both lead singers are amazing). There's that day shot to ... 😎 ... Hell. And I see Therion and Sabaton (metal plus history lesson) in there next week, too.

The line-up is quite good usually. But the festival is victim of its success. The tickets are sold out before the line-up is known. I can quite easily see 80% of the bands in the line-up in festivals closer to home, so I used to wait to see if there were bands in the remaining 20% which I wanted to see live. Unfortunately, I can't do that anymore. So I watch whatever I can from home 😋

Here's the Alestorm concert, hoping there's no geographical restrictions:

Here's the Epica concert at Hellfest... In case you missed it.

(Can anyone tell me if those videos are geo-limited or not?)

Nightwish will be live in one hour from now. (I'll post it here once it's done.)

I watched both of those live so definitely available in Canada. A lot of the Nightwish fans on Floor Jansen's fan site are saying the Nightwish set might be their best since Wacken 2013. Epica was a good show, too. The fire-breathing cobras are quite the thing. I watched Blind Guardian, too, but not live.

Sadly, Sabaton wasn't streamed, which was the other one I had my eye on.

They sometimes put concerts on arte.tv which were not streamed live, usually it takes a month or so before they do... I'll keep an eye out for the Sabaton one just in case.

Just discovered Stream of Passion, a now-disbanded Dutch prog metal group fronted (and co-founded) by Mexican-born vocalist Marcela Bovio. Marcela's been around for a while in various groups and on her own. She's another classically trained vocalist in the vein of Nightwish's Floor Jansen.

Two of the original voices of symphonic metal finally came together in 2013 when Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation brought Tarja Turunen, the original lead singer of Nightwish, onboard for a power duet. It's an amazing song, both the original video and this live performance.

I like metal like Metallica, Pantera, Megadeath, Iron Maiden. I don't know the lesser known bands.

Not much into what's considered metal since the 1980s, though I did kinda like the more industrial oriented metal of the '90s. I do like the early metal, like Black Sabbath, and the genres that are closer related to that, such as stoner.

Just felt like sharing this cover of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song by the french Stoner Rock band Los Disidentes del Sucio Motel (yes, their name is in Spanish despite the band being from Strasbourg, near the German border... Don't even try to make sense out of it, lol)

I've seen them a few years ago at Hellfest, on the "Valley" stage where the music is usually of the slower kind (Doom, Sludge, etc...) Actually I only saw half of their set and it was thanks to a friend who came to fetch me when the band managed to get a circle pit going (a rarity at the Valley!)

I liked what I heard that day but somehow, in the midst of everything else I heard over the weekend, I just forgot about them until this cover landed into my recommandations a few months ago. I've since had their albums on repeat quite a few times.

Today I thought I'd offer those who might be interested an occasion to discover this band too.
