I also am a huge fan of David Gilmour and miss Pink Floyd and wish they'd do some new stuff together.
Great minds think alike but dirty minds work together.... ;)

I don't have one favorite, but I really like Paul Burlison's sound and playing on the early Johhny Burnette and the Rock and Roll Trio recordings.

Nothing fancy, especially for this day and age, but for a tune that was recorded 60 years ago it has a very nice groovy riff.

Wouldn't you rather have a nice cup of tea?
One of my favourite albums for guitar is Abraxas by Santana. The playing on that is some of the most expressive I've ever heard. I hate most of his recent output, but the playing on this record is just phenomenal.

For inventiveness, I mean, Hendrix, of course. Modern rock guitar would be nowhere without him.

Beyond that, I'd say Sonic Youth (Lee Renaldo, Thurston Moore) really redefined the role of guitar in modern rock, using them more texturally than melodically.

Following in that vein Mary Timony from Helium did some pretty cool stuff on their first EP Pirate Prude, but has gradually become less experimental in her playing. I just think she's underrated.

I'd also have to give props to Neil Young for the solo in Cinnamon Girl. Young was a talented guitarist in his own right, but to put it in context, this was the era of guitar Gods (Clapton, Hendrix, etc.) These guys are pulling off these blazing solos that are just amazing, and so Young gets to the solo for Cinnamon girl and says 'Oh yeah? Stand back and watch this!' and proceeds to play just a single note over and over again. da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da. And it was perfect for the song! It was such a ballsy punk-rock move far before punk was actually a thing. (But let's not forget, there's also Down By the River, Cowgirl in the Sand, Like a Hurricane, and Cortez the Killer (and many others) for evidence that Young could really play when he wants to).

Finally, to round out my list to 6 (this was just supposed to be one, right? Oh well). There's a new guitarist from Niger in Africa who goes by Bombino. Super-talented.

Don't believe everything that you read.

Lindsey Buckingham

Have you ever seen them play? I saw Fleetwood Mac in ... 2004 (I think). It was incredible, but I remember Lindsey during Tusk and thinking it looked like him and Stevie were still coming down from everything they ingested in the 70s ;)

I've loved trawling through these pages, am going to have a serious listen to the names I am less familiar with.
My knee jerk no thinking response would have to be Mark Knopfler.
English Gentleman
BB King. here is him from his teaching guitar

Stevie and Lindsey probably still have drugs from the 70s in their system to this day. I have never had the pleasure of seeing a live show, though I have seen clips of their shows online and it's incredible. They put on a damn good show. I also love Mark Knopfler, talented guy.

One of the best ever-- Stevie Ray ?

The first time I saw live music in Austin in 1977, I saw Paul Ray & The Cobras. Stevie was the #2 guitarist, but when he broke into Voodo Chile, the whole bar went dead silent.

There are and have been many great guitarists and it is hard to pick one without nodding to others...
Mark Knopfler, indeed and,
Carlos Santana
Kevin Peek (Sky)
Jan Akkerman (Focus)
John Williams (Classical and Sky)
Hank Marvin (Shadows)
Emppu Vuorinen (Nightwish)
But, above all these and many others I may have inadvertently missed it has to be the man who can make a guitar sing,

DAVID GILMOUR!

I'm the best guitarist in the world except for this gypsy who lives in France.

How come nobody mentioned Hose Feliciano? I agree about Eric Clapton, John Williams, and even Dylan
Active Ink Slinger
Jose Feliciano is a fine guitarist, but when you limit the discussion to your favorites, you either have a huge list or you leave out many fine guitarists.
If I want to rock=Jimi Hendrix//// Quiet time=John Denver

Terry Kath - former lead guitarist for Chicago....even Jimi Hendrix said he was the best
George Harrison, but I love Robert0909 and 69Kisses96 choice of Jose Feliciano. I never would have thought of him, but yeah, he could play a great acoustic

I have three famous stories, 2 recommended reads and have come in the top ten in two competitions~ Come in and make yourself at home.

Advanced Wordsmith
There are so many, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen are tied. Marty Friedman and Craig Chaquico are there also. Probably the most versatile is Carlos Santana. But when mountain biking and road biking I love a variety of all guitar instrumentals.
Active Ink Slinger
Terry Kath of Chicago was ahead of his time. If only he wasn't also a gun nut with a drinking problem. There is a guy here in Austin I would add to my list. If anyone else on Lush has ever heard of him, I would be shocked. Here he is doing a cover of Led Zeppelin's Kashmir BY HIMSELF on acoustic guitar.

He is so far out of the box that I think his version of The Christmas Song, made famous by Nat King Cole is among my three favorite versions of that song.
