We have all heard so many painful words
Cruel words said in anger the replay won't stop
How come they know exactly what to say
Their words make our self worth rapidly drop

The painful words stay ingrained forever
When it is quiet they play as if on repeat
Making our hearts break all over again
Eventually we think we deserved the defeat

After so many painful words we build walls
Trying to protect fragments of heart that are left
Not knowing if our damaged hearts will heal
Stealing self worth is the worse kind of theft

After time we become a shell of what we were
Empty inside, we begin to feel nothing at all
Yet the painful words play on repeat endlessly
Making us feel unimportant, making us feel small

Emotional pain is unseen, leaving no viable scar
Only the one suffering knows the depth of despair
Emotionally shut down, hiding within ourselves
Afraid to love someone else, too afraid to care

When I least expected it my silence was broken
He came out of nowhere I never even imagined it
He showed me the beautiful love I had lost faith in
Still in the quiet painful words refusing to quit

How do I turn them off and enjoy this new love
How do I believe the good words he speaks to me
The painful words are permanently ingrained inside
I pray his love can finally set my damaged spirit free

When you speak to the person you love dearly
Even in anger you must choose your words carefully
For after the fight when you want to make up
